Serie A
Serie A is the top division of Italian football. Its 20 clubs play 38 matches a season, and the league has a long reputation for tactical sophistication and organised defending.

Competition identity
Serie A has been played as a single national league since the 1929–30 season. Italian football is closely associated with tactical detail — from compact defensive structures to flexible back-three systems — which makes it a rich league for football analysis.

How the season works
The Serie A season runs from late summer to late spring. Matches are spread across the weekend, with some midweek rounds, and Italian evening kick-offs fall in the early hours in Malaysia.
How points and ties are interpreted
Serie A has used head-to-head records between tied clubs as its main tiebreaker, and its regulations have also provided for a one-off play-off match when a tie affects the title or relegation. Because these rules have changed over time, the current season's regulations are the authority. Compare tiebreakers across leagues
