How Premier League Fixtures Are Scheduled

The Premier League publishes its full fixture list before each season, usually in June. Dates are then adjusted during the season as matches are selected for broadcast and rearranged around cup and European commitments.

The fixture list

Before each season, the Premier League releases a full list of 380 matches โ€” 20 clubs each playing 38 times. The schedule is produced with scheduling software that balances many requirements, including home and away sequences and clubs that should not be at home on the same day for policing or practical reasons.

Why matches move

  • Broadcast selections: matches are chosen for live coverage and moved to different days and kick-off slots, typically announced several weeks ahead.
  • Cup and European fixtures: clubs in the FA Cup, League Cup or UEFA competitions may have league matches rearranged.
  • Other factors: weather, safety or other exceptional circumstances.

Festive fixtures

English football traditionally plays over the Christmas and New Year period, including Boxing Day on 26 December, when many other leagues take a winter break.

Watching from Malaysia

Because English kick-offs convert to late evening or early morning Malaysia Time, a moved match can shift from a comfortable 22:00 slot to the small hours. See the kick-off time conversion table
